It can get expensive providing meals for a large family over time and everyone can appreciate a break in the spending at least from time to time. With proper planning a person can make complete meals at a fraction of the normal cost. A sufficient meal budget over the long run can have a noticeable savings in a person’s expenses.
A meal budget is nothing more than an allotment of money towards a meal. Spaghetti, rice, beans, hamburgers, and all types of meals have a cost to make. It depends on the quantity or how much needs to be made, and the list of ingredients.
Recipes will list how many servings the portions provide. Depending on the eating habits of the family, number of servings can be determined. Purchasing items in bulk is a potential savings so it may be beneficial to make twice as much and freeze the balance in vacuum sealed containers. A toaster over is an excellent way to reheat meals evenly without drying the food out. If freezing food is not an option, then send food to the neighbors and have them return the favor later in the week.
There are always ways to save on the price of the ingredients. Coupons and sales are routine, so shop at all of the grocery stores and consider all brands to find the lowest cost. Keep an eye out for sales on items such as pasta, rice, beans, spices, and any other items that will keep for a long time. Buy as much of these items as possible in bulk at the best price. This helps keep the overall meal cost low even if fresh items are running high. If possible keep a few weeks supply of meat frozen and rotate in meat as it comes on sale.
Keep a history of the price of the meal from time to time so that there is a future reference. Prices change and food costs rise overall. Knowing the price of a meal gives a quick reference to know if it is a good deal to make it or not at that present time.
Combining meals is a good way to make use of items while they are fresh and get a variety of meals for a low price. Some items are used in a meal but are not often used elsewhere. Search and find some other recipes that use that ingredient while it is fresh. Often times it will go bad before it is used again so finding another use ends up being a cost savings.
Setting a price, finding the deals, and presenting the meal with money to spare is what budget meal planning is all about.
