JILTED FIANCE

Sitting at the edge of the pond and reminiscing on life up to this point brought tears to my eyes.  Life form appears to be moving along no matter the obstacles that stand in their way.  Look at the ants for example, working in unison seem to be innate to them.  Scurrying along their route fetching little crumbs here, there and everywhere works just fine.  No scuffle develops when a collision occurs, probably a silent apology is rendered and the procession moves along.  Nothing seems to hinder their progress or make them change course.  The intent is to get food back to the nest to feed all who are doing a different task back there.  Looking across a little further out into the deepest part of the water, the frog sat contemplating his next move.  Silence to him is progress, as he maps out the surrounding with a view to sight pending danger.  Rough skin and sharp eyes make him almost immune to predatory attacks.  So often a collision with a human will have the human screaming all the way to their rooms.

A smile lifted the corners of my mouth as I remember my first encounter with a frog.  Crossing the river one day whilst returning from school, I daintily stepped on what looked like a stone.  Indeed the thought crossed my mind as to why the stone’s surface was so visibly rough; but it should be all the better for my footing as I would not slip.  Hunger was overwhelming my senses and getting some food was my only aim.  As soon as my foot landed on what looked like a stone, it moved from beneath me.  Water began to pour into my shoe and then something leaped in the direction of my other foot.  A scream reverberated from within; the thought of which to this day makes my blood curdles.    It was never my knowledge that humans could fly, but that is exactly how my journey across the river ended that dreadful day.  There is no recollection in my mind that walking took me across that river.  Therefore, that silent looking frog would now be kept under my radar until my departure from this pond today and I reminded myself to never go over to that side of the pond ever again.

If only humans could be less complicated and would mesh so intimately with their environment and others.  This great fuss seems to envelope us everywhere we go. The water looked real cool and would certainly rejuvenate my feet on this hot summer’s
