Runes are ancient and were used in most of Northern Europe from 100 B.C.E to about 1600 C.E. The runes could be made of bone, rock, ceramic or bits of wood. They were used for writing and divination. Today runes are used mainly for quick divination. Runes may not always be easy to read but they are far quicker to use than the tarot should you be short on time but in need of an answer. Be warned, runes are only glimpses of possibilities not certainties. Time is ever changing and so is the future.
I have two rune sets, one which is a “new age” set made with colourful stones with golden markings and contains 8 runes and another “ancient” set that contains 25 runes. I prefer the 25 rune set because I feel more comfortable with the brown stone and plain markings that it has. It feels more natural in my hands. Like with tarot cards you need to find a set that speaks to you. If you are so inclined and crafty you can even make your own runes using materials you are comfortable with.
Each stone is marked with a particular icon with it's own particular meaning. With my 25 rune set how the rune lands, right side up or upside down, determines either a positive or negative aspect. Not all rune sets use that rule.
Once you have either purchased your rune set or created your own it is important to read the meanings to all the runes you will be using. You don't need to memorize the entire literature written about each rune but you should be able to remember the greater meaning of each and what they can mean when paired up with other runes.
Typically I use a three rune cast. The first rune shows you where you have been, the middle rune shows you where you are and the third rune shows where you might go should your course of action stay the same.
When asking a question do so in a quiet space where you can concentrate on that one question. Meditate to quiet your mind. Ask the universe, spirits or personal guide for guidance. Be respectful. Once you feel you have made a connection and your mind is filled with only that one question shake the bag holding your runes. Then either shake out three or reach in and pull out three. Make sure you don't peek! If you shake out the runes leave them where they land, if you pick out the runes then place them side by side 1,2,3.
Remember that runes are meant to be used as tools to help guide you to a desired goal or help you see a situation in a clearer light. Runes provide the sight of possibility not certainty. They are a useful tool and fun to use whatever your chosen path.
Enjoy and may all your paths be lit with love.
