President Obama, not only has been a disappointment to moderate Republicans, but also to his own party, and the left.
A story came out yesterday that President Obama is seeking to replace Rahm Emmanuel with William Daley as his new chief of staff. The interesting thing about William Daley, is that although he is a Democrat, his politics could hardly be called leftist.
Daley has substantial experience in the private sector. Former vice chairman of the Amalgamated Bank of Chicago, and one of the draftees of the NAFTA bill, Daley has the gravitas to be accepted as a wise voice of counsel on issues ranging from international trade, to how to bolster the sagging economy. And he is no darling of the liberals, angering them when he said in the Washington Post in 2009 that the White House was too far to the left, and must "chart a more moderate course".
The question politicos must ask themselves now is this- why the change of heart? Why isn't the President headed for another leftist in the number two spot of political power in the country?
Basically, because he wants to win in 2014 reelection, and knows that the failed economy needs to be repaired in order for that to happen. But if Obama believes that America is best served by a liberal agenda, why wouldn't double down on his game plan, continue with a progressive battlefront and communicate his agenda to the American people?
Because he knows liberal politics and policies don't work and are destructive to the economy, not helpful. The political realities for him know that he can't move too far to the right, either by hook or by crook, but also understands that big government ain't workin'. Time to change the direction of the ship, and it's interesting he may be choosing a more conservative course. This is not to say that he will legislate like a Reagan, but rather will LOOK like he is, while running the economy less intrusively. The distinction is important.
The lefties in Congress know the same thing, otherwise they would have run this past November on their track record. Let's face it, they got more done and accomplished more for big government and liberalism than any Congress in 100 years. Why wouldn't you celebrate that? Why not run on a platform of a renewed health care system, protections for unions and environmentalism? Talking to a liberal in October of 2010, the would have said "Obama who". Some of those senators acted like they never even heard of the guy. BarbaraBoxer's website during the election had a huge banner across it, saying how much she does for small business- the freaking banner said Small Businessman Boxer. Of course now its back to the same old agenda, of liberalism from don't ask don't tell, to environmentalism.
Not the President though- Boxer isn't up for reelection for 6 years, Obama has to start running now. And he knows that not only that progressive policies don't work, the people sure as heck don't want it. The last election would have proven that to a blind man. From now until November 2012, Obama is going to walk and talk like Reagan, and legislate a more moderate course.
But don't you believe it.
The real actor in the White House wasn't Reagan- it's Barack Obama, and he is about to give a grand performance.
