"Beam me up, Scottie" will never be uttered as brilliantly as they were by William Shatner's character Captain Kirk. The quirky new frontier television show of the 1960's was made famous by the actor. Mr. Shatner was 'Captain Kirk' and always will be. With that said, of course he can't play a young handsome lead character anymore because obviously, he's older now. However, a beautifully scripted movie could have him play himself in reflection scenes or fast forward scenes.
The idea of replacing the famous character's actor seems almost sacrilegious. If you asked a full-fledged 'Trekkie' , they would resound the same sentiment. Unfortunately for the movie industry, you cannot replace a true epic icon like Shatner. More than likely the studios are at a crossroads: to include Shatner's 'Kirk' or not to include, that is the question. If they should rewrite the whole premise with the idea of no 'Kirk' ( starting over with all new characters ), that concept just may not fare well with true blue fans. And if they should include using the Shatner 'Kirk', they have to handle it in such a fashion so as to not wreck the portrayal that is famously linked to the beloved television show. It is a dilemma.
Another consideration is the fact that maybe Mr. Shatner doesn't want to. This seems to be a crushing statement in itself to most of the fans. The idea that he would not want to play his career highlighted character again sounds devastating. So there's another struggle for the studios, to make the new movie script appealing to the actor. Pleasing the actor and the crowds who would love to see him take the command of the Enterprise once again. Hopefully, the arrangement of the story line is a good one because honestly, if Shatner returns 'Kirk' to the screen, the plot better be a good one or it will be a disappointment to the fans. Again, the dilemma.
It would be amazing to see Shatner's 'Kirk' come back to the big screen. It would be fantastic to see all the original Star Trek characters take flight into space, the final frontier, again. With or without Shatner, the fans will pour into theaters to see the new Star Trek movie, after all, they are 'Trekkies' and you can't take THAT away from them.
