Flash fiction: A winter romance

by Barbara Combs Williams

Created on: January 09, 2011

Evelyn touched her long slender fingers to the faded photo. It was well protected by the glass in the frame. A frame that had seen some time and wear. Its aged patina dulled at the corners from so many years of being held and caressed, but still so greatly loved.

The photo like Evelyn was more than a few years old. But no woman wants to tell her age and the framed photograph guarded its age very well as every sophisticated woman does.

It showcased a laughing couple. He was tall and in uniform. One could still tell it was an airman’s dress uniform. His cap was roguishly tilted to the side and she was so beautiful in a springtime flowered dress. A little hat with an ostrich feather and small veil covering one eye was on her dark haired head. A fur collared coat, partially concealing her flowered dress completed the ensemble.

She smiled as she remembered them as they had been so many years ago. He, a young man, home from the air force that winter; and she a girl, barely turned 18. It was so cold that winter and she had borrowed her mother’s best coat to meet him down at Spencer’s department store. They had a special going on, with every purchase; you received a special Christmas photograph taken by a local photographer.

He had scrapped together enough money to buy the hat, a whopping $5.25. To her it was a fortune for the time and the most wonderful of Christmas presents that and him being home.

He asked her to wait for him. She of course said she would and he kissed her full on the lips in front of the local photographer.

Evelyn remembered like it was yesterday and she smiled, as she caressed the aged frame that held the photogrpah of the laughing couple on that day,  that winter so many seasons ago.
