While there were many items in the news this week that drew my attention and ire, there was a small victory in the battle for the safety of our children that deserves our undivided attention. The murderer of Jessica Lunsford was found guilty of the multiple crimes he committed. He will go to prison and may even be put to death. But this is no reason to celebrate. This is a call to action.
If you followed the short trial, you most likely know the grisly and horrific details of the crime. The evidence made the case a no-brainer. The previously convicted sex-offender even admitted the crime while in custody. We all knew he was guilty. We can all breath a sigh of relief that he will never get the chance to hurt another child. We should all take a moment to honor the child that has been lost and the family that will never forget.
But this does not bring back a darling young girl who suffered grievously. It doesn't do anything to protect our children from the overwhelming evil that is stalking them every moment of every day. And that is what we are fighting - evil.
I've heard many people try to downplay the ferocity of the crimes perpetrated against children, every day in every town in America. Excuses are made and "mentally ill" people are paraded across our television screens. And we are asked to have sympathy for the criminal along with the victim. We are asked to believe that these evil people are disturbed and deserve our compassion. We are required by the law and judges to give them chance after chance after chance. Unfortunately, it often takes a tragedy of immense proportion to bring us to our senses.
Why is it so difficult to recognize publicly what we know in our hearts and minds? (All of us have encountered evil at one time or another in our lives you feel it, you instinctively know it when you encounter it. Don't allow the PC activists to inhibit you from naming it. This is evil and deserves to be punished. We are only safe if it is locked away. There is no therapeutic treatment, no safe distance, no adequate supervision or monitoring that can protect your child from this. Every child in America is at risk, every day.
I urge everyone to begin a dialog a dialog with your elected state representatives, a dialog with local law enforcement, a dialog with local elected judges, a dialog with your school administrators, a dialog with your family, friends and neighbors. Most importantly, begin a dialog with your children. We must come to a consensus that this is an evil that will no longer be tolerated at any level. We must put these criminals on notice that we are watching and are prepared to defend and protect our children. We must assure our children that even though this evil force is ever present and gunning for them, we will step in and protect and defend them, always. We will honor the children already lost. We will accept no less from our government. We will pass Jessica's Law.
