A successful party is planned with the right combination of elements. As a host there are certain responsibilities to be aware of such as the well being of the guests, and overall management of the party.

The most basic element to a party is the reason for throwing it. It could be a wedding reception, a birthday, or a summer feast that brings people together, but the reason is what helps determine other aspects of the event. The theme of the party leads to appropriate decorations, food, games, and entertainment ideas. The more a person knows about the theme and reason behind the party, the better they will be at projecting it on the party.

The guest list is important to finish early for a few reasons. The size of the party is necessary to know for preparation of food, drinks, and seating arrangements. Certain types of people will not feel comfortable in some environments. Be aware of who the guests are and don’t invite them if they don’t have any interest in the theme of the party. Determine if there are any people on the list that do not like each other. It is hard to say what will happen if they both show up but be cautious and prepared for the worst iif they are invited.

The food and drinks are the life blood of the party. Have a wide variety of snacks and food prepared in advance. Wrap meat with foil and contain it to keep it warm. Plan to eat at a certain time and do not bring the food out until then. This helps to keep the food fresh and the meat warm. Snacks should be left out so that people have something while they are waiting for the main course. In addition make sure to have enough alcoholic drinks on hand. A keg of beer on ice with plastic cups is an easy way to keep the beer flowing.

Don’t forget to let guests know if they should bring something. Most guests are happy to bring drinks or some other needed item. It helps to reduce the overall cost by assigning certain items for guest to bring so plan accordingly.

Entertainment is necessary for a party. There are many types of entertainment available to have at parties. Music is an easy way to spice up a party. Have enough speakers and amps for the areas where the guests will be. More people will require a louder sound system and if there are enough people it may be best to provide a DJ. Live musicians, and games such as horseshoes, poker, darts, trivia or croquet are also potential entertainment ideas.    

As a host it is important to be seen and enjoy the party with the rest of the crowd. It makes guests feel more comfortable to talk to the host of the party. It is important to balance the responsibility of overseeing a party and having a good time so it never hurts to invite trusted friends to assist with party management during the party.
