Does God Have A Sense Of Humor?
As we read the Holy Bible we learn a lot about the attributes and character of God! We see that God exhibits different emotions at different times. There are moments when He burns with anger against His enemies or even His own nation and there are other moments when He is moved with compassion for them. There are seasons when He weeps over the choices of His children and seasons when He rejoices over them. There are occasions when God laughs in the face of His enemies and occasions when His heart is broken.
It has been debated for centuries whether God has a sense of humor. Is He up there rolling with laughter on His throne at some of the things we say and do? Does He find comedic relief in some of the situations of life here on earth? Does he instigate occasions in our daily lives that set the stage for the humorous to occur in order to please Himself and at times to bring joy to us? When addressing whether God has a sense of humor we must first understand this thing called “humor.” Humor is a comic, absurd, or incongruous quality causing amusement. It is something that is so out of sync with normal life that in it we find amusement. Humor in its purest form is far removed from the crass and crude comedy of modern standup comedians. What we have been programmed by society to believe is funny, is not funny to God. He is a perfect and holy God and many times what passes as humor or comedy to sinful man is an abomination to Him who created humor. We can never think that profane or perverse comedy, whether in the form of words which are written or spoken, pictures that are drawn or roles that are performed, can ever be pleasing to God. Filthy jokes and dirty quips do not tickle God’s funny bone. We must be careful to separate the profane from pure humor. Where did the idea of the humorous come from if not originating from God Himself? Proverbs 17:22 says, “A cheerful heart is good medicine.”
Although there is no verse in the Bible that specifically says, “God laughed or joked” we don’t have to look very far in scripture to understand that God has a sense of humor. For instance, in Genesis 1:27 it is recorded that, “God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” According to this verse it stands to reason that if we are created in His image and likeness and we can sense what is humorous and funny
