A movie that had been years in the making, Freddy vs Jason was finally produced and released in 2003. There was a lot of promotion and hype surrounding the film in the hope that it would live up to the fans expectations.
Freddy vs Jason stars Robert Englund, who plays the infamous character, Freddy Krueger, and Ken Kirzinger, a stuntman that took over the role from Kane Hodder, who played Jason a total of four times in the most recent films of the original franchise.
With a movie that is titled 'Freddy vs Jason', the need for a plot was minimal, but it has one anyway.
Freddy has been dead and in hell for years, but wants to be resurrected to stalk the children of Elm Street again. The only problem is that he is not powerful enough to do this due to the children not fearing him, so he wakes Jason from his grave to kill the kids in order to instill fear into them.Things take a rather hillarious twist when Jason becomes too greedy and keeps killing, not leaving victims for Freddy. Freddy then turns his attention to Jason and wants to defeat him. It is at this point that the battle that every horror fan wants to see becomes a reality.
Freddy vs Jason never takes itself seriously, and keeps the tone light, despite Freddy being a bit more of a darker character in this one than he has in previous sequels.
This is really Jason's movie in that he is the main star of the show in terms of the one performing the gruesome kills while Freddy remains in the background for the first hour of the film, waiting impatiently to gain enough power to have some sick fun of his own.
Monica Keena plays Lori, a mentally tormented virginal female teenager whose mother was said to have died in a car accident but eventually grows suspicious of her father when she is told information by her friends about his allegedly bad past.
Her character is really just an excuse to have a main female star of the movie, although her performance is above average for this genre of movie, even if Keena is sometimes annoying.
The other characters are mostly forgettable, teenagers that exist purely as kill meat for both of the iconic slashers, although Kelly Rowland has a surprisingly sizeable role as Kia, a typical cocky teenager who is a bit too brave for her own good.
The gore is heavy, but made of mostly CGI and these computer effects can always be spotted.
If you have never seen this film before and are expecting to see Freddy and Jason soon into the film then you may be disappointed as their first battle does not take place until nearly an hour into it.
Time is given to build up the so called plot, and Freddy fans may especially dislike the fact that Jason commands most of the screen time doing what he does best.
The final battle is an unforgettable thrill ride! It is back and forth filled with lots of blood with both Freddy and Jason using their recognizable weapons against each other.
I will not spoil the outcome, but it may leave you begging for more!
Freddy vs Jason is for horror fans only, and the most devoted ones of Freddy and Jason at that!
If you do not give a care about the franchise of either character then you probably will not enjoy this one. Afterall, it is a vs movie, so why would one care who wins if they do not like either icon?
But, after many years in development the combat did live up to expectations, however, I feel that it tried to be more complex than it ever needed to be, resulting in not really caring for the subplot.
Still, it is worth a watch, and if you really love it like I did, then certainly a keeper!
