I would have to disagree, by following just a few simple steps, one can still remain competitive and successful on ebay.
First, don't flood the market with your item(s) release them a few at a time to ensure maximum final sales price.
Second, make sure you have the longest auction time period you are comfortable with, your final price will always be higher with a 5 or 7 day auction than one with a 1 or 3 day time frame. Give people a good chance to see and be interested in your gear.
Third, tell people exactly what you have, give good descriptions with regard to condition and exactly what is included, this way your item will give the bidder confidence that you are upfront and have nothing to hide.
Fourth, don't use horrible fonts and colours, although this is a technique employed by some power sellers, it just makes the whole experience horrible for your potential customers. I find it is best to stick to a clear, large font for the main description and maybe a brighter colour in bold to define special features or conditions of the sale.
Fifth, always start an auction at a dollar (or some other nominal figure) as this will encourage bidding and make your item hit the top of the list when sorted by price etc.
Finally, offer more, be willing to post around the world, people love to shop from all ebay facilities, but are often disappointed when worldwide postage is not available, or horribly expensive. Charge honest rates for worldwide postage and you will only increase your customer base.
I hope this gives ebayers some confidence that individuals can still make a go of Ebay and be successful, I think that ebay has certainly grown, but not outgrown the average seller.
