Realistic New Year's resolutions for a better life

The beginning of the New Year is a time when many begin to think of ways to improve themselves or their lives in some way. Setting New Year’s resolutions is a common tradition for many, but often those well-intended goals are forgotten or abandoned. This New Year, try to set realistic resolutions to improve your life.

Resolutions to Avoid

Resolutions to do something too big too quickly often cause the goal-setter to become frustrated or depressed, and ultimately give up. Avoid resolutions that set you up for failure, such as “get back into my high-school jeans” or “give up caffeine completely”. Try to set a goal to eat healthier and exercise more, which should lead to weight loss and consumption of less caffeine.

Avoid resolutions that depend on someone else’s behavior. Instead of vowing not to fight with your spouse, make plans to be a less argumentative person. This way, no matter what the other person chooses, you have the choice to stick to your commitment to yourself.

Resolutions that are contrary to your nature are another potential pitfall to avoid. If you are afraid of heights, do not resolve to go sky-diving. Instead, resolve to face your fears in realistic and doable increments. If you do not like children, do not resolve to volunteer at a children’s hospital. Find things that fit who you are, but make you a better or happier person.

Resolutions that Work

Being physically fit is important not only to your physical health, but your mental and emotional health, as well. Regular exercise and healthy diet improve the immune system and mood, as well as strengthen heart, lungs and muscles. Getting 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic exercise per week and doing strength training for all major muscle groups at least twice per week will improve many aspects of daily life for most Americans. Getting in shape can be done in small steps, with completion of each milestone being an opportunity to celebrate and encourage one’s self on to the next phase.

Life in today’s fast-paced world can be hectic. Over-booked schedules, too-long to-do lists, and over-taxed minds cause our bodies to exhibit signs of stress. Headaches and tense muscles can be just the beginning. Stress that is improperly managed can cause weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, and a host of other ailments.

There are ways to beat stress. First, plan ahead.
