Poetry: On a cold winter night

by Janeal Mulaney

On a Cold Winter’s Night

The snow was flying in the wind, as the temperature dropped.

With the clouds hanging overhead, the day melted into night

On this long cold winter’s night, I bundled up in front of the firelight

Soon you would be home to cuddle up with tight, warm chocolate a waiting

S-mores resting on a plate ready to be heated, when you cap comes off your head

On this long cold winter’s night, I bundle up in wait by the firelight

You’re late, but then the roads are bad, so it will take you longer to share our bed

The windows are frosting over, but I look outside anyway waiting for you

On this long cold winter’s night, I bundle up in front of an open door to wait

Still you do not come, but I hear sirens in the background from a short ways away

A cold chill runs through my body, and I fill the black close in around me

On this long cold winter’s night, I collapse in front of an open door.

You come to me, one last time you say my name and whisper I love you

I love you now and I always will, take care of yourself and I’ll be around

On this long cold winter’s  night my love had to say goodbye
