These seven tips cover all the basics of writing a good blog. Get these right and earning money with your blog should be a breeze.
1. Write about whatever interests you - Obvious advice but critical. If you aren't interested in your subject than it won't show that you are excited to share this information. If you aren't excited then your writing will be dull and even monotonous to read.
2. Give your blog a theme - Themes attract readers because it gives them some idea as to whether you're writing about something they're interested in. A theme will help when people ask that crucial question "What is your blog about?". My personal blog's theme is 'Art, humor, life and social observations', which is quite broad because I write on many subjects. However, if you're interested in say, 'cats', then your overall theme could be 'Cats and their nine lives'.
3. Catchy name and catchy headings - 'Catchy' is another word for 'hook'. The hook is what attracts a readers attention. A catchy title for your blog and catchy headings to your individual posts will help attract readers. For example, if you're writing an article about your pet cat who sleeps all day on the couch, don't title the post "My cat sleeps all day". Think of something more creative that may grab a readers attention e.g. "The dreams of a cat potato" (get it? 'Cat potato', 'couch potato' errr....never mind).
4. Write the way you talk - the easiest style of writing to read, reads like a conversation. i.e. is in plain language with simple terms and maybe the occasional big word just to challenge the reader. Read what you write aloud. If you're struggling just trying to say it then chances are people will struggle reading it. Needless to say good grammar and spelling are a must!
5. Use images/photos - you don't need them on every post but interesting images can help to hook your reader in. Be sure that the image does actually relate to the post. You don't want to disappoint people looking for more information about the picture by not referring to it in your writing.
6. Always credit your sources - if you've researched a post or quoted from another blog etc. be sure to credit your source. If possible even provide a hyper link. Linking to other places online is good. Those sites that you link to may return the favor by linking to your article/post (bringing you readers).
7. Respond to comments - if you have a blog that allows comments on each post (and it's a very good idea to allow comments) then take the time to respond to your readers comments. It shows that you do read comments and gives your readers a bit of a personal interaction with you. You'll seem more real to them and they may keep coming back because of it.
Obviously there are many more tips, such as being sure to make regular posts, but if you pay close attention to these seven then you should be on your way to writing a better blog.
