How do you know if you are sending your child to the right daycare center? While every child's needs are different, there are a few basic features that every daycare should have, to provide a safe and healthy environment. It is important that you visit the daycare during operating hours, several times if possible. Dropping in unannounced will allow you to view the employee(s) and how they interact with the other children. Make an appointment for your child to visit with you for a few hours before you commit, so that they too, can get a feel for their new daycare provider.
First and foremost, if there is a contract, be sure to read it several times, so that you know exactly what you are signing, and agreeing to. If the center does not have a contract to sign, be sure that you write down important information about the centers rules and policies.
Look for cleanliness and safety throughout the building. Does the area look safe for your child's age group? If upon first glance, you would feel comfortable leaving your child there, then it is time to look a little further. Be sure that any food items appear to be properly stored. Check for age appropriate toys and activities for your child. If nap time will be had, you will want to see what the sleeping area looks like. Be sure to find out if bedding is provided, or if you will need to provide it. If there is an outdoor play area, it should be well secured with a fence.
The hours of operation should suit your schedule. Likewise, you will want a daycare that offers a bit of flexibility with their time. Talk with the director about their policy on late pick ups and early arrivals. Sometimes being twenty minutes late picking up your little one, can not be avoided. Many centers charge extra (sometimes a dollar per minute!) if you are late. Be sure to find out, so that there are no surprises when the time comes.
What are the centers policy for emergencies? Ask about the procedure for situations such as a fire or tornado, late pick up, bad behavior, sudden illness or injury. Voice any concerns that you have immediately. If there is a policy that you do not agree with, ask if there is a way to implement a different approach, one that suits you. It is important that you be allowed to pop in whenever you wish. On the other hand, ask about the policy
