The New Faced, and Old Faced Colored Teddies, by Ty, the manufacturer of beanie babies are two distinct, and rare sets of colored teddy bears produced between 1993 and 1995, They were very popular among collectors, and commanded top dollar, in the market place.
Five distinct colors in both sets, Teal, Magenta, Cranberry, Violet, and Jade, and the brown teddy bear. The old faced bears were distinguished as the eyes were sewn outside the seam line, and they appear more "old fashioned." These bears were produced with first, second, and, third generation, swing tags.
In the Old Faced Colored teddies, Jade had the most produced in the third generation colors. The rarest of them individually in the old faced teddy bears is the Old Faced Brown Teddy Bear. This bear commanded up to $2800.00, mint with mint tag, at the height of beanie baby mania. Very few of these first generation brown teddy bears were produced, and they are rare.
In 2011, you can find the Old Faced Brown Teddy Bear for significantly less, if of course you can find one, and then find somebody willing to let it go at the current market prices, significantly less.
First generation swing tags, are swing tags that are single sided. They were the tags that were attached to the very first beanie babies. They are heart shaped, but do not open or close.
The New Faced Colored Teddy Bears, by Ty sported the same colors as the Old Faced group of bears, but the New Faced Brown Teddy bear in the third generation is not as rare as the colored teddy bears. it is very rare in the second generation swing tag.
The second generation swing tag opens and closes. It has thin Ty skinny letters. When a beanie enters the market place for $6.00, and within a few years is commanding $200, and then the exact same beanie selling for 200.00 is now $2000.00 in a year, beware of counterfeits.
If you are building a collection of New Faced Colored Teddies, or Old Faced Colored Teddies, or both, make sure you interact with reputable dealers. If you aren't sure of what you have, take the time to have it authenticated from a beanie baby authentication service. You might do it even if you are sure of what you have, as it provides credence to the sale.
Building a collection of Old Faced Colored Teddies, and New Faced Colored Teddies, is a collectors delight. Take care to take care of the tags through placing tags in tag protectors, and expect teddies to maintain their value, while providing you enjoyment through the years.
