How to factory reset a Sony Ericsson C902

With the Sony Ericsson c902 now getting on a bit and many people with them either passing them on or leaving them in a wardrobe, one thing they should know is how to factory reset the phone, or as the phone calls it “Master reset”. This is where the phone is effectively reset to the same settings as when the phone first left the shop, deleting all the saved information on the phone and allowing you to pass it on safe in the knowledge that people won’t find any information you may have had stored on it. This is different to the phones secondary reset option the “Reset settings” option which just resets all the settings (such as ringtone, wallpaper and the theme) and leaves your information (contacts and texts mainly) on the device.

To start you will need to turn the phone on (if it’s been left in a drawer and forgotten about you may need to charge the device first) then open the “menu”, by default this is done by clicking on the main “select” button from the home screen. From here you need to access the “settings” menu, by default this is the option in the bottom right hand corner and has the shortcut key of #, though with different themes you may need to scroll around to find it. The icon is of a screwdriver and a spanner (if that helps you find it) again press the main centre button to select it.

The first tab of the settings option shows “General”, this is the one you want to be on and you want to scroll down to the bottom of the options. There you will find “Master reset”, click it and you will see two options, “Reset settings” and “Reset all”. Although this is a guide to master resetting it’s worth quickly adding that “Reset settings” should make your phone run quicker and you are advised to do it every few days regardless of anything else as it just helps speed up a few processes (according to the manual).

To finish resetting the phone to the “factory” settings you need to click on “Reset all” then “Cont.” (again pressing the centre button) when at the prompt screens that follow (of which there is a few). The phone will then go to the home screen for a few seconds before resetting. When the phone turns back on you will see the Sony Ericsson logo for a few seconds before a “Please wait” screen starts with a loading bar. When this completes your phone blacks out and turns it’s self back on before being fully reset and just as it would be as if it was bought brand new from the store.

Somethings to note before you do go resetting everything:
Items saved on to the memory card are safe from being deleted as are contacts saved on to your Sim Card. Some items that the network may have added to the phone may also be deleted whilst all settings (from time, date, theme and even sound) will be set to the default and all texts will be deleted.
