Book reviews: House of Dark Shadows, by Robert Liparulo

This is another one of those freebies from Amazon that try to suck you in to the Kindle. Since I already have a Nook I read this little gem on my also little iPod Touch. It is a little easier on the eyes if you make the font bigger; the only drawback is the constant changing of the page. I did not notice the same freebie had been posted on the Nook Books until today; I finished this book in the wee hours of the morning.

I read the first chapter weeks ago, apparently I got lost in the holiday madness and forgot about it. That is, until last night when I was trying to finish up Almost Heaven by Chris Fabry. It’s funny how simple things can just escape your mind.

The first chapter hooks you. By the middle of the book you are reading more. Now, I have to admit I felt some of the things that were happening in the story were a bit cheesy and silly, but I read anyway. Little did I know I was reading a book for young adults. What? No wonder there is a long of weird Harry Potter type magic going on.

The Kings move into a large house. A house full of secrets and magic. Strange things are happening, things that just can’t be explained by simple logic.

By the end of the book I was angry that it ended so abruptly. There literally was no ending. You are just left hanging there thinking to yourself, what? Wait! It can’t be over. There has to be more. There is more, you just have to buy the next book in the series.  I would call this good marketing, but even the best writers have some sort of an ending to the book and the next book follows the main character with a whole new story. One might introduce a few new characters; have some of the old characters reappear. But, apparently not the Kings Series. The next book picks up right where this one leaves off.

The last paragraph:
“At that moment, he’d have given anything to redo the past hour. He closed his eyes. Had it only been an hour? An hour to go from his front porch to here?

In this house, stranger things had happened…….”

Yep, the end. See you later, good-bye. Of course you are going to have to read the whole book to find out what this last paragraph is talking about. It is rather cryptic isn’t it?

I guess this is why it was free. So you would read this far, get hooked and purchase the next in the series. *sigh* Despite some of the oddities, the book is very suspenseful and keep you on your toes. Honestly, you really don’t know what is about to happen next as this story is all over the place!

It was a fun read and I can’t wait to read some more.
