NBA player profiles: Raymond Felton

by Justin Manucci

Created on: January 04, 2011

Raymond Felton is currently a NBA player, who is playing for the New York Knicks. Raymond Felton was born on June 26th, 1984 in Marion, South Carolina. Previously in his career, Raymond Felton played of the Charlotte Bobcats.

Raymond Felton began is basketball career in high school, at Latta High School, in Latta South Carolina. Raymond Felton’s high school career was very successful, helping lead his high school team to two state championships, and leading his team to an incredible career record of 104-9. Felton also set several state records during his high school career, by scoring 2992 points, and having 117 3 point shots. He was considered one of the best players in all of South Carolina, and won many awards to prove it.

In college, Felton continued to play well, although it is much more difficult to dominate in college basketball. Despite that, in his Freshman year he was voted Carolina Player of the Year, and was the Player of the Week 3 times. Felton averaged around 12 points a game, which is obviously down from his high school days, but still very impressive for a freshman. During Felton’s junior year at the University of North Carolina, Felton helped lead the team to the National Championship in 2005. Felton provided some of the key scoring to help win the game, including a clutch three pointer, as well as some very key free throw shots, which ended up being some of the last scoring of the game. He was recognized as one of the best college point guards in the game, and received the Bob Cousy Award, which honors the best collegiate point guard.

In 2005, Felton’s junior year at the University of North Carolina would be his last. This is because Felton would go on to be drafted by the Charlotte Bobcats. Being that Felton had spent his entire life playing basketball in Carolina, this was obviously pretty exciting for Felton. Felton would play with the Bobcats from 2005 until 2010. On July, 9th, 2010, Felton would agree to a contact with the New York Knicks. The deal was later finalized 2 days later, and the deal went through for a 2 year, 15.8 million dollar contract. Felton would later be selected for co-captain of the team along with fellow free agent signee, Amar’e Stoudemire. So far in the 2010-2011 season Felton has performed well for the Knicks, and it looks like the Knicks are finally starting to become a good team.
