Healthy New Year's resolutions for kids

Created on: January 03, 2011

When we think about New Years resolutions, we usually think of things like giving up smoking, or losing weight. Of course, these resolutions are made by adults. However, it can actually be great for kids to make resolutions, too. The thing that needs to be remembered is that resolutions for children should be reasonable and fun. It should teach them that they can achieve what they want to achieve if they really set their minds to it.  It is also important that these resolutions are healthy for children to undertake. Of course, telling a child to make losing weight a resolution for themselves would be wrong. Here are some good resolutions for kids that are not only healthy, but can also prove to be enjoyable and rewarding.

We all want to teach our children to be nice to other people. Of course, it would be unreasonable to expect a child, or an adult, to get along with everyone that they meet. However, one good resolution could be to try and do something nice for another person at least once a day. This could be something simple like giving someone a compliment, or holding open a door for someone. Although this may seem like something very simple, it can often brighten someone’s day. It will also teach children how to interact with other people in a civilized manner.

Another thing that we want all children to have is good manners. Of course, this is something that has to be learned. If a child often forgets to say please and thank you, or address people in the wrong manner, then a good resolution could be to make sure that they use the right manners at the right times. Not only will this help them later on in life, but it will also make them feel good as other people will be impressed by how polite they are. It is a resolution that they will find very easy to keep on top of.

Eating healthily is important for everyone. However, it can often be difficult to encourage children to eat the right amount of fruit and vegetables every day. Of course, five pieces of fruit and veg a day is going to be hard to manage. So, one idea is to encourage your child or children to eat one piece of fruit or veg every day. Many children will find this easy to do, and they will definitely benefit from it in the long run.

Tidying is something that most children do not enjoy. However, it can be very difficult for parents to keep up with cleaning the entire house as well as the children's rooms, especially if they work as well. This resolution would obviously not be suitable
