Drag myself out of the bed,
Dreading work, the day ahead
Stumble to the coffee pot
Feel as though I’ll need a lot
I shuffle to the bathroom now
Perhaps the shower will help somehow
Now, for the weather check
So I’ll know which clothes to pick
I drag the door back, and look out
And suddenly I want to shout
Before me there are mounds of snow
No people out, No way to go
Flip on the news and sure enough
The city is in a total muck
All over town businesses are closed
Excitement is crawling to my toes
I phone the office to report
I cannot come today to work
“Quite a shame, for sure” I say
To have another “snowed in” day
Once the phone is safely off
I yelp and jump and skip and hop
Somehow no longer needing sleep
I grab that book I want to read
I hit the coffee pot again
Pop out the recliner and climb in
Nothing energizes me more I say
Than a lazy, do nothing, “snowed in” day

Poetry: Snowed in
by Carol Gioia
Weather reports predict
a blizzard coming our way,
closing highways and byways,
suspending movement all day.
Angry laments
It dumps and clumps and freezes rumps
This cold stuff falling from the sky
Shoveling is every grownup's job
And no pay from
Having never lived, in a cold and wintry place.
The newlyweds were unaware, of what they both would face.
A snowy
White fields as far as the eyes can see
Piled high against the walls
Covering the garden and the path
There is no going out
Snowed in again today
Trapped in a white cocoon
Thinking of games to play
While stuck in my room
Waiting for the weather
