The genre of superhero movies continues and with Kick Ass the film takes on a new slant with the story of the underdog. The film is based on the graphic novel by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. At the time of the release of the graphic novel it was well received given the fact that the well know world of the underdog hero is turned upside down… the film on the other hand lifts the story from the graphic novel and bring an extra flavour into the mix with high levels of violence and what can only be called colourful metaphors in terms of dialogue.
The story on the whole is very good. Dave is part of the high school geek squad, a student who has big curly hair, glasses and likes reading comics, think Big Bang Theory in terms of how they are, so fitting in with the perfect people is a bit of an issue. When he discusses the potential of non super-powered human becoming a hero he is shot down by his friends. However this doesn’t stop Dave and he consults the internet to purchase the suit of choice, a green all in one cat suit with yellow braiding and a matching mask. When Dave sees a car being broken into by two louts he dons the suit and tackles them head on, a few minutes later he is on the floor bleeding after being stabbed then while stumbling away is hit by a car. Recovering in Hospital, Dave has been told that his entire skeleton has been re-enforced with metal plates due to the injuries and that his nerve endings have been damaged, hence he cannot feel any pain. At home Dave creates an on-line page for Kick Ass, he soon has a cult following, especially when footage of Kick Ass outside a convenience store reaches You Tube… Kick Ass becomes global. From here on Kick Ass helps others out and quickly becomes involved with other heroes, the various other sub-plots come together as the film evolves in quite a frightening manner.
I’ll be totally honest here, I’ve never heard of half the cast before at all. The younger members of the cast such as Aaron Johnson who plays Dave/ Kick Ass is very good in the role he plays and delivers the part of Kick Ass in a fresh manner, this is supposed to be a comedy as in parts it is very funny, the opening scenes kind of set the tone with the failures or success the story may or may not tell. Naturally you need a big name in the film, Nicholas Cage is that actor playing the role of Big Daddy, initially starting out as a sub-plot story the character brings his own gravitas to the film and doesn’t
