Video game reviews: Prototype (PS3)

by Samuel Reid

Created on: January 03, 2011

Set in New York, Prototype tells the story of a man who plays a central role in what could possible be a nationwide, deadly epidemic. The game starts with a small scene from when he is telling the story, 18 days since the start of events in the game. After a short mission where the player can learn the controls, you are placed back to the beginning of the events that led up to that day. You awake in the morgue as Alex Mercer, albeit with no memories whatsoever of who you are or what happened to you. You are quickly placed in a run for your life as the military and Blackwatch commandos try to hunt you down, but not before discovering that you have amazing powers such as improved movement (jumping, sprinting), the ability to alter your biomass (shape-shifting), and the ability to consume others and assume their form, abilities and memories. The story of Prototype follows Alex as he tries to discover what happened to him, and to kill the Infected wherever possible.

The missions of the story are consistently interesting, as each mission either unlocks a new power or has you aiming for a new objective (killing enemies, collecting items, flying helicopters etc.). The story features many characters, with the cut-scenes between missions outlining the degradation of New York into chaos. To begin a mission, you simply need to travel to the mission start-point, where you are shown a quick video before being given your first objective. The only issue with this is distance. Missions usually end on one side of the city or the other, and if you want to immediately start the next mission you may need to travel all the way across town. This can get repetitive and boring, as time is wasted running back and forth along the same roads.

However, this is made up for by the inclusion of Free Roam events and bases. In Free Roam, you can simply run (or glide) around New York causing havoc and destruction wherever you go by killing citizens, Infected, or military. Events are unlocked as a reward for mission completion, with each mission unlocking new events. These are spaced around the city, and are arranged into five categories: Movement, Glide, Kill, War and Consume events. Events will grant EP, as well as a medal based on how well you completed the event (gold, silver and bronze). Achieving gold in all the events will unlock new 'platinum' events. Military bases are another way to spend your time in between missions. Simply travel to the nearest base, consume the base commander,
