There are many favorite winter themes for handmade decorations and gifts, but snowmen seem to be one of the most fun, signifying the thrill each child demonstrates at the hope of a white Christmas.  Snowman crafts come in many forms, and there are many ways to adapt the theme to youngsters of all ages.  If you can think of a crafting medium, you can most certainly find a snowman craft to make, and if you can think of a child who loves snow, you can think of an age appropriate snowman craft to entertain that child, providing meaningful activity which will result in a decoration or gift for the proud youngster to give.  Following are some simple snowman crafts for you to try with your children.

Popsicle Stick Snowmen

Snowmen may traditionally be composed of balls, but that doesn’t mean a snowman craft needs to be.  A Popsicle stick can serve as the body, with any number of materials useful for decorating.  Paint the Popsicle stick white, and tie a thin strip of scrap yarn, or felt, around the stick, 1/3 of the way down, as a scarf.  Decorate the top third with paint, sequins, felt pen, or small foam cutouts and plastic eyes.  Cut a top hat, or stocking cap, from felt, foam, or construction paper, and glue in place.  Place sequins, beads, or small cutouts as buttons down the bottom 2/3 of the stick.

This is adaptable from toddlers, to teens, with the level of help needed dependent upon the age and dexterity of the child, toddlers needing the most help.  Popsicle stick snowmen can be hung as Christmas tree ornaments, with hangers glued to the backs, or with small holes drilled through the heads for ribbons or hangers.  Use the snowmen as gift decorations, or even as tags.

Have your child create a family of popsicle stick snowmen, signifying each member of your family, and mount the snow family on a decorated sheet of cardstock, displaying in a frame, and give to Grandma and Grandpa, aunts and uncles, or close family friends as Christmas gifts.  Hot glue a magnet to the back, and this simple snowman craft becomes a refrigerator magnet.  For more fun, help your child to label the fronts of a pair of snowmen with the words “naughty”, and “nice”, a humorous spin to a popular Christmas concern.

Building Block Snowmen

Again, diverging from traditional, rounded snowmen, find building blocks of various sizes, preferably cubes.  Craft stores often carry plain wooden
