The future of driving and audible SMS

Audible SMS is a reliable system of sending and receiving text messages (SMS's) using voice commands.  The idea behind it is you could listen to text messages sent to you by simply by using voice commands, allowing your eyes to remain on the road and your hands to remain on the wheel at all times.  The system is still not quite widely used, as mainly the voice recognition technology just hasn't been good enough.  Recent advances in voice recognition algorithms, along with advances in the computer power of mobile devices and computers in general, have led to the possible use of voice recognition technology in real world uses.

An audible SMS system would easily allow you to record new SMS or text messages by voice only, automatically transcribing them into text messages and sending them.  The whole process would be done without needing to look at the phone or even touch it.

The use of a reliable system like this will greatly increase safety and allow drivers to communicate without being distrac4ted.  While drivers should always devote their full attention to the task of driving, modern life dictates we remain constantly in communication.  Texting is extrememly dangerous as it requires drivers to divert their attention, divert their eyes away from the road and also take their hands off the wheel.  It can lead to deadly consequences in an instant.

I am a frequent user of text messages and I know this system would be great.  I can imagine getting notification of a new text message and being able to tell the phone to simply read the new message.  The phone would then read the message in a computer voice, also informing me of who had sent me the text and other delivery details.  Next I would have the option of calling the person back by phone or replying by text.  The phone would then allow me to speak a text message, which it would convert to text, read back to me for verification, and then send to my desired recipient.  I could also add new recipients from my address book or other options.  All control would be hands-free and done by voice only.

If the system worked smoothly and properly, it really would respresent a breakthough in safe technlogy.  We have the computing power, we need to implement audible SMS systems to keep drivers and everyone else safe.
