Live rock concerts: Recommendations and guidelines

As a fan of many facets of rock music, I have been to countless rock concerts. I have seen my all-time favorites, short-time favorites, and straight-forward hated acts perform in many different settings. I have seen bands play in small clubs, large arenas, and awe-inspiring outdoor stadiums. Over the years, I have learned some do's and don'ts related to having a pleasant rock experience.

1. KNOW YOUR SHOW: This seems straight forward, but try to know more than just who's playing. Some of the most vital information to know is the seating arrangements, if any. Some bands who play arena shows have opted for assigned seating throughout the entire arena, including the floor. Some cities require this arrangement due to tragic past events. Knowing this will determine how early you arrive to what you bring with you.

2. TRAVEL LIGHT: Attending a rock show can be like preparing for a long battle. The last thing you want is to be weighed down by unneeded accessories. Bring your I.D., some cash, and a cell phone (if REALLY needed). I always bring a credit card, also, just in case of emergency. I carry a small wallet that holds my I.D., my wife's I.D., some cash, and the credit card. If any of your cloths have any pockets with zippers or buttons, this is a good time to break them out. The last thing you want to be doing is searching the floor for your cell phone in the dark while a massive mosh pit is taking off. This is a time to also decide if that coat or hoodie is really a requirement. If you're in a seat, this doesn't matter. But if you are on a general admission floor, the last thing you will want is a jacket weighing you down.

3. THINK AHEAD: If you can, try to take public transportation to a concert. I know, no one likes the bus, but it really saves the hassle of parking and having to drive home in what could very well be a intoxicated state. Even if you are dead sober, most clubs and arenas are close to bus stops or transit centers so you don't have to worry about parking six miles away. If you do use public transportation, know the schedule so you can get home. One night after a Tomahawk show, I literally watched as the last train pulled away, leaving me downtown in Portland. This is what the extra money and credit card is good for because cabs are always available.

4. HAVE FUN: Simple, right? Let it all hang out. You spent $15 to sometimes over $70 for a ticket, it is your right to have a good time. Don't worry about looking like an idiot because there are thousands of other idiots around you. And please, don't start a fight. This just perpetuates the negative image of rock music.

5. RESPECT YOURSELF, RESPECT THE BANDS: This is more of a personal issue for me, but it amazes and bothers me nonetheless. I don't understand why anyone would pay ANY amount of money and then only show up for the headliner. I almost always arrive early so I can get my money's worth out of a concert. Yes, many opening acts may very well be bad, but this is their job. Some bands really bring their A-game when serving as openers. I was lucky enough to see bands like Incubus, Slipknot, and Mudvayne play show as opening acts and I will honestly never forget those shows.

Music is a huge part of my life and so, in turn, are live concerts. My recommendations come from years of attending shows and work for me. To a good fan and continue to support rock music.
