The spirituality of dogs

by Nancy Houser

According to the Native Americans, the Great Spirit gave the dog to the people on Earth as a gift. And when God made the spiritual dog for them, he seemed to make it without ego. In actuality, it should surprise no one that a God-given gift would be without need of an ego. It should also surprise on one that the dog has a purpose on this earth that humans are blindly unaware of – an angelic job as a teacher of unlimited forgiveness and unconditional love for all. This does not take a lot of intelligence, but it does take pureness of heart and soul that few people have.

People on Earth are not like dogs, as humans like to pride themselves on their exquisite intelligence that has been shown to cause global combat and wars, massive genocides, destruction, power struggles and greed. But the latest scientific studies on dogs show that people are beginning to think like dogs. The New York Times has published an article saying the dog does not think as a human does, but instead has developed their own intellectual capacity and thinks more their own with a specific type of dog intelligence.

More and more, people are preferring to maintain a control of the ego as compared to being spiritual, demonstrated by the use of the word "I" or "me" within individual thoughts or conversations. The ego consists of a mental process, not as a separate entity of the body – influencing a person's behavior, the thinking process, actions, decisions and speech. When the ego takes control over the body, that person begins to behave in a manipulative manner, filled with loathsome thoughts based on uncaring and self-centered attitudes. The spiritual dog is incapable of such acts, so one would assume that the spiritual dog is more spiritual and capable of unconditional love than people are. Of course, this is nothing new to loving pet owners.

Is it possible for a dog to say they believe in God or spiritualism? Not verbally, of course. But on the other hand there are people who can say it verbally and mean it less than a dog does. Dogs live their faith every waking minute of their lives while on Earth. Bragging rights to spiritualism are what people use - not dogs. And people make sure other people know they believe in God and are Christians, which nullifies their belief - "I have read the Bible today. "I" have attended church this week. "I" give to charity. "I" am a God-fearing person. Look at me. Look at me. Yet few can practice true faith as a dog does who speaks
