Tips for saving on children's winter clothing

As the temperartures drop during the winter months, your clothing allowance for your children may very well be on the rise. Let’s face it, winter clothing is always more expensive than summer clothing in most cases. However, there are a few ways to save money on winter clothing for children and keep them warm and in style.

Thrift Stores

Many thrift stores such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army have some amazing discarded treasures for an amazingly low price. By shopping at these thrift stores, you aren’t just saving money but you are also helping a good cause. Most people donate their unwanted or outgrown clothing to thrift stores. This is a great way to buy children’s winter clothes and save tons of money. Chances are you will even find brand name items that look brand new. Your children won’t even notice that they are used clothing pieces.

Consignment Shops

Consignment shops are similar to thrift stores. You can find some amazing deals at consignment shops, especially for children’s winter clothing. Consignment shops can work a couple of different ways. Some will buy your old clothing that you no longer need, which will give you more money to buy new clothes. Plato Closet does this and they only accept certain brands. Therefore you are going to definitely save money on brand name clothes for your children.

Another way consignment shops work is you can bring in your unwanted clothing and they will sell it for store credit. If your item sells then a portion of the price is put into your “account”. You can then choose to buy winter clothing for your children from their store or receive a check to go else where. Granted, you don’t have to bring in clothes to shop at a consignment shop. It just helps to save you even more money on the kids’ winter clothes.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead is a key element to saving money on winter clothing, especially if you don’t want them wearing gently used clothing. The best time to buy new winter clothing for children is at the end of the season. At first this may seem like a crazy idea considering this is a time most people are shopping for spring and summer clothing. The reason why you should consider buying the clothes at the end of the season is simple – everything goes on sale. You may be thinking, “But children grow and may not wear the same size next winter.” The solution: buy the next size up. Many times, you can find winter clothing up to 75
