Starting a home based business is an exciting proposition and one that many people consider. However, there are drawbacks to home based business opportunities that many people have not considered. Here is what you need to know when starting a home business.
Not all opportunities are created equal
Home based business opportunities are presented in a variety of forms. Some companies offer direct selling, others offer data entry positions, and some are driven by the entrepreneur. Before launching into any home business opportunity entrepreneurs should carefully investigate the background of the company. This may be done by reviewing the company through the Better Business Bureau and checking Rip Off Report for information. Using these investigative methods prior to getting started can help an entrepreneur avoid getting taken for a ride.
Understand the rules
Contact the town clerk and secretary of state in your specific area. There may be rules in place that can impact whether or not you can legally conduct business from home. Most towns will allow business that does not have a negative impact on traffic to operate from home provided the business is legally registered. The secretary of state may also have specific filing requirements for at home businesses.
Understand tax filings
The Internal Revenue Service is clear that until a business turns a profit, it is considered a hobby. However, once a profit is turned there are tax obligations that must be met. There are numerous tax deductions that are allowed for business for those who keep proper records. It is good idea to review the tax laws as they will apply to an at home business.
Setting up an office
For most home based businesses it is a good idea to set up working space that is separated from living space. Just because a business is small does not mean that proper working space should not be allocated. Those who are interested in developing their business will only be able to do so if they have properly planned for handling the requirements of working from home.
Business planning
Many people feel that if they are planning to start a home business that a business plan is not necessary. This is not necessarily in the best interest of the entrepreneur. Even a home based business can benefit from having a solid business plan in place. Business plans can help an entrepreneur set goals, establish deadlines and help plan marketing more effectively. Business plans are a good idea regardless of what type of business that is planned.
Summary
While there are hundreds of possible ways to start a business at home, there are some basic things that all entrepreneurs must do to succeed. Understanding the pitfalls of a home based business before getting started are among the things that you need to know when starting a home business.
