Usability and navigation are critical factors in the experience customers will have when they visit your website. Improving the usability and navigation of your website can result in higher conversions and a positive difference in your bottom line. This brief checklist is an aid in evaluating your website for usability:
Navigation
1. There is a clear indication of the current location.
2. There is a clearly-identified link to the homepage.
3. All major parts of the site are accessible from the homepage.
4. A sitemap is available.
5. Site structure is simple, with no unnecessary levels.
6. If necessary, an easy-to-use Search function is available.
Functionality
1. All functionality is clearly labeled.
2. All necessary functionality is available without leaving the site.
3. No unnecessary plug-ins are used.
Control
1. The user can cancel all operations.
2. There is a clear exit point on every page.
3. All graphic links are also available as text links.
4. The site supports the user's workflow.
5. All appropriate browsers are supported.
Language/Content
1. The language used is simple.
2. Jargon is avoided.
Feedback
1. It is clear what is happening on the site.
2. Users can receive email feedback if necessary.
3. All feedback is prompt.
4. Users are informed if a plug-in or browser version is required.
5. Users can give feedback via email or a feedback form.
6. If necessary, online help is available.
Consistency
1. Only one word or term is used to describe any item.
2. Links match titles of the pages to which they refer.
3. Standard colors are used for links and visited links.
4. Terminology is consistent with general Web usage.
Error Prevention and Correction
1. Errors do not occur unnecessarily.
2. Error messages are in plain language.
3. Error messages describe what action is necessary.
4. Error messages provided a clear exit point.
5. Error messages provide contact details for assistance.
Visual Clarity
1. The layout is clear.
2. There is sufficient "white space".
3. All images have ALT text assigned.
4. Unnecessary animation is avoided.
