Best horror movies of all time

by Cory Morlidge

Created on: December 31, 2010

Horror movies nowadays, have become simple predicable formulas put on repeat that seems to always bring in success. They aren't very expensive to make, and the teenagers usually always pay to go opening weekend to see it. But are any of them actually good? In this day, the answer is usually no. The most recent decent horror movie I saw was Saw 7. It was good, because it was exactly what I expected, and was decently enjoyable. If you went into it expecting an Oscar- worthily film, well then you bound for disappointment.

What makes a horror movie good? Well one with a compelling story, that scares you, that doesn't use blood, guts, and sex simply to cash in. Some good ones, have been bloody. If the movie can keep you completely on edge, it didn't really matter if it was bloody.

So I'll look back in time now, and go over the ten best horror movies ever made. Well start with number ten. (Now keep in mind this is from what I've seen, there could quite possibly be some even better ones I haven't seen yet.)

#10. SCREAM (1996) There are some, yes, some who would say this is more comedy then, horror. But if you watch the very first scene, you will see this is no laughing matter (for now anyways) as a girl (played by Drew Berrymore) receives many ominous calls from a stranger, and we learn just how vulnerable she is, and your just hooked, or griped, or even sucked. Now, this movie was intended to make you laugh & scream. Wes Craven is one of horror's great directors, and screenwriter Kevin Williamson managed to write a terrific script that semi- parody's the horror genre, but doesn't fall to the goofiness of the Scary Movie franchise.

#9. POLTERGEIST (1982) I can remember the first time I watched this movie, as it alot of the inspiration that went into one of my own screenplays. Producer Steven Speilberg and Director Toby Hooper delievered a knockout. From furnature stacking itself, to man peeling off his own face? I know for sure a few times, when up late at night hearing the national anthem playing, I felt somewhat uneasy. I wouldn't watch this one with the lights off - or alone.

#8. NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (1968) George Romero was by the far the king of zombie movies, and this movie was the king of all zombie movies. This movie (along with the Birds for that matter), explored giving an unknown behind all the un-dead. Personally, I think explaining your bad kills your story anyways. (See Halloween: Curse of Michael Myers to see my point. There's
