Tips for correcting iPad Wi-Fi connection problems

Whilst most iPad users fall in love with their new tablet as soon as they get it out of the box, the most common cause of complaint seems to be problems with the Wi-Fi connection. These problems can include a complete lack of Wi-Fi connection, dropped signal, weak signal and varying degrees of speed once connected.  Here is an overview of tips that may help resolve some of these Wi-Fi connection issues.

Establish that there is an available Wi-Fi signal

It may seem obvious, but users should firstly check whether there is any available Wi-Fi network in the area. Go to Settings, then Wi-Fi and check for a list of available networks. If nothing is showing then there may be no coverage in the area. Private networks may not show up at all. Some Wi-Fi locations require password access. The password should be entered via Settings, Wi-Fi, Other before trying to connect.

Try moving to a different position

It is possible that the user is not close enough to the hotspot hub or router, or may not have a clear line of sight. The user should shift position, ideally to move closer to the hub or to avoid obstructions. This may seem obvious but a small difference in distance can actually make a big difference.

Check the router/hotspot hardware

Another thing that may seem obvious, but user should always check that the hub or router is switched on. Ensure that all the cables are properly connected. If necessary, try turning it off and restarting. These basic issues are very often the cause of the problem.

Check the connection settings

In public locations, there are often several networks in the same location, sometimes with different names. Users should ensure that they are trying to connect to the right one. One location may offer a private network and a public one but both may have very similar names.

Check accessories and hardware

Try removing the iPad from its case. Some cases can interfere with the signal. Try restarting the iPad. Turn off any Bluetooth devices that are near the iPad. Move the iPad away from mobile phones, wireless speakers and even microwave ovens. All these things can interfere with the Wi-Fi signal.

Use ‘Renew Lease’ on the iPad

When a user connects to a new network, he/she effectively ‘leases’ an IP address on that network. These normally time out after 24 hours, but in some cases, they remain live. If the user subsequently tries to connect to the network with this lease, the network may reject the request. Go into the Wi-Fi
