As the National Football League’s season winds down, the debate that has been dominating the airwaves over the past few days is who deserves the MVP? Is it Michael Vick or Tom Brady? When talk of the Most Valuable Player erupts, inevitably the talk will turn to who is the most overrated player in the league. Well, over the last ten years, there is clearly one player who has been over-hyped more than any other player in the league. Peyton Manning. Yes, Brett Favre is a close second but the way Favre has conducted himself over the last two years has shown his true colors and turned his career into greatness gone awry with selfishness and stupidity.
By all reports Peyton Manning is a nice guy. He speaks well. His commercials are funny. His acting skills are above average for a professional athlete. However, his statistics say his football play isn’t as great as people think. He has been to two Super Bowls and won one of them against a team that was considered the worst Super Bowl team in the last decade, the Chicago Bears in 2006.
Peyton Manning’s Indianapolis Colts play in a nice, comfortable, dome with a retractable roof. Lucas Oil Stadium was opened in August of 2008. Prior to playing there, the Colts played in the RCA Dome which was another enclosed stadium where the weather didn’t affect the play of their football team. If you read the description of Lucas Stadium it tells fans the building consists of a retractable roof and window wall which allows the Colts to play both indoors and outdoors. Well, when was the last time the Colts played a home game outdoors when it was raining, snowing, or cold? Since Manning has been a member of the Colts they have never played a home game in bad weather.
The fact of the matter is Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts can’t play in cold games that take place in cold weather cities from mid-November to the end of the season. Since 1998, Peyton’s rookie season, the Colts have played a total of sixteen regular season games out of a possible 207, as of 12/30/10, that would be considered cold weather. His record in those games is 6-10 with 26 touchdown passes and a 63% completion percentage. He has also thrown 18 interceptions
