To put time aside for ourselves when there are children around can be hard enough as it is. When they want our attention, constantly {babies and toddlers} then it can be almost impossible. Yet, some people manage to cope and, work around this, with no problems whatsoever.
With older children it can be easier. They know when their mum or dad are busy writing and they, by the age in which they understand a lot more, should have the sense not to disturb their parents. Many parents do their writing when their children are at school anyway. In fact the best time to write, is during school hours and also when the children are in bed.
Those are the times that many parents use and take advantage off to complete whatever writing assignments they have. In fact night time and during school hours are the times when most writing takes place within the home. Writers try and complete as much as they can while they have their time, solitude and space to themselves.
Babies and young children take up such a consummate amount of time and energy that parents have to write when they grab a chance. If the children are toddlers, then when they are in nursery is {if they go} is an ideal time for writers to get to work on the keyboard. if you have older children who understand a lot more about your work, then they would tend to leave you be if you want a spare hour or two to yourself in order to write.
Most older children will simply get on with their homework, or find something else to do while you are busy writing. Of course if they are stuck on their homework, then any parent would stop what they are doing and help. Nevertheless, with older children it is about give and take most of the time. If your children have been brought up to respect your rules and regulations within the home, then they would know that as much as they are important to you, your writing is too. They will know not to disturb you when you are busy typing away.
As explained above however, with very young children, things have to be done another way. You may not always get the time to write - if you are a single parent - and you have to grab the moment when it occurs. Or, if you have a good friend or family member who could look after your child for an hour or two, again that would be a big help.
However, if you are in a partnership, give and take comes into play. In many households, were either one, or both parents write, each parent will take turns in looking after their child/children, while the other writes for a certain amount of time. This is one way of dealing with the problem, and as long as both partners are in agreement, then there is no reason why this system should not work.
