NEW YEAR'S EVE WITH AUNT KITTY - It was New Year’s Eve and the celebration was about to begin at the Chug-A-Lug Lounge. Angie, Grace and Liz, frequent Wednesday afternoon Happy Hour customers had reserved a table for the night’s festivities. They rarely came here on weekends, as it is located near their work and inconvenient to their homes. New Year’s Eve was a special occasion, however, so the trek into town didn’t seem a problem at all.
This year, even though they were dating and/or engaged, the boyfriends, for one reason or another couldn’t make it to the party. A heck of a way to start the New Year. Such was the sentiment of all concerned.
Aunt Kitty herself had introduced Grace to Tim and the two were now engaged. Tim had flown to Japan on a business trip right after Christmas and was not expected back in time for the bewitching hour tonight. Angie’s boyfriend, Jay, ran a restaurant three doors down from the pub and she would be going there shortly before midnight to join him. Liz’s boyfriend, Wes was in Afghanistan with the Army.
They had gathered at Grace’s apartment for a pre-evening cocktail and then headed downtown. As was their usual custom, they drew straws to see who would be the designated driver. It would be Grace. Tonight was to be an extra-special treat for all the regular Happy Hour customers of the Chug-A-Lug, as Aunt Kitty would be attending.
Kitty, the very eccentric aunt of Liz, had made a splash at her first Wednesday afternoon gathering with the girls and had been invited back on three other occasions. She entertained everyone in the pub with her stories, her half-baked advice and opinions on life. Always the life of the party, Kitty loved to make a grand entrance after keeping everyone waiting, watching the door anxiously for her arrival.
After greeting the other early arrivals, Grace and Angie took their seats but Liz remained standing.
“Hey Guys, for those of you who know my Aunt Kitty, I have news for you. She’s comin’ here tonight.”
The regular patrons applauded at that news and began to tell the newcomers just what to expect.
“This is going to be one interesting evening,” Liz overheard one man say.
The girls ordered a round of drinks and sipped them slowly. They had arrived early and didn’t want to be too intoxicated to enjoy the whole evening. They were practically bombarded by other patrons who wanted to know the time of Kitty’s arrival.
