There are five basic principles of the role as a new father during childbirth: (1) Do not panic! (2) Be prepared, (3) Ask the mother-to-be any relevant questions if she is in active labor, (4) Talk to the doctor and any important staff on the job, and lastly (5) Be present for the birth of your child. With these five principles along with your natural protective instincts and the wonderful contribution from your fabulous self, keep them in mind and you will have a very grateful momma in the recovery room.
Firstly, when I say "Do not panic," I mean do not panic. Your significant other is already very emotional and in astronomical pain. The last thing she needs is for you to show any crazy, frenzied, I-don't-know-what-to-do signs. If you don't know what to do, pretend to know what to do. Reassurance is the God-send for any woman in active labor. Do not go to the extreme and come off as insensitive, she'll resent you. Comprehend the situation at hand, and let her know you will not leave her.
Secondly, be prepared. You should have at least two bags packed: the mother's labor and post-delivery bag and the newborn child's diaper bag. For an optional carry on, take with you a reasonable sized bag of snacks and drinks; this is for you when the time is appropriate. Do not eat or drink in front of her; possibly the condition she may be in will forbid her from eating or drinking (i.e. C-section, or being close to delivery). The following items should be in mommy and baby's bags:
Mom's bag:
-her favorite book or magazine,
-a stuffed animal or stress object,
-and focal point objects like pictures of family
