When grandparents babysit their grandchildren

by Jennifer Moore

Grandparents that babysit grandchildren do so because of the pleasure and joy it encompasses. The satisfaction of babysitting is time spent with them. When children are grown and on their own, your home feels empty. Babysitting is an opportunity to spend time with grandchildren and produces memories that last forever. Grandparents may babysit because parents need a night out together, an unforeseen emergency or just to have time with grandchildren.

When grandparents take care of grandchildren, it is loads of fun for kids because grandparents sometimes allow children to do things parents do not. For instance going to the movies with friends or buying a large gift not earned.  Grandma or grandpa also load the children up on sweets and then send them home to mommy and daddy, which is the fun part of spoiling.

In a grandparents eyes this is not spoiling. They are merely trying to make the grandchildren content and feel at home. Grandparents have a tendency to indulge the grandchildren and that is their right within reason. Why, because grandparents that have not seen them for a long time want to show how much they have missed precious time and it shows lots of love.

Of course, boundaries need to be established.  Grandparents should not allow grandchildren to do anything to cause harm to himself or herself or anyone else. Grandchildren should respect their grandparents by not causing undue stress or aggravation. Parents should furnish food and drinks for their children while they are at away.  Most grandparents are on fixed incomes and do not have extra money to furnish things the children need throughout the day.

Before taking children to the grandparent’s house, speak with your children. Discuss respect for people and how to act while in their presence. It is not a grandparent’s job to discipline the children or teach them to respect the elderly. Teaching manners and respect is up to the parent.

Parents can help grandparents childproof their home by removing objects that can hurt a small child and by placing baby gates at areas where children could fall. Place cleaning products under lock and key or on shelving high enough that young children cannot gain access.  This ensures no accidents happen and children stay safe.

Countless times grandchildren are closer to their grandparents because of a special bond or connection. Grandparents often play games, take children to a park to play on swings, catch a movie and then a meal afterwards. A number of grandparents take their grandchildren shopping and let them pick out a toy they have been wanting for a long time. Yes, it sounds like spoiling but that is the best part about babysitting grandchildren.

For grandparents that babysit, it is a pleasurable time for both grandparent and grandchild. Make the most of everyday because no one knows what tomorrow holds. A grandparent is full of pride and joy because they have watched their children grow and have children of their own for which they now babysit with pride and joy.
