As Facebook has become the dominant player within the social networking scene with over 500 million accounts, it has become a key battleground for many companies to tap into the traffic. There are a couple of basic strategies required to be able to use Facebook to generate traffic to your website.

The first strategy is to become your brand representative on Facebook. To do this simply create a profile and set it up using your own name. Fill in the basic personal information and any details you feel comfortable sharing with anyone. It helps to be a real person with a passion for your brand, but not to have it sound like a sales pitch. After all, the whole idea is that this is a social network and not a business website.

When the profile is set up and you are logged into the account you can set about creating a more detailed page for your business. To do this, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the advertising link. This will bring you to a page where you can learn how to create a Facebook page. It is important to read this the first time you create a page as the name and category you choose is permanent.

Both the name of the page and the category selected plays an important role in attracting fans as well as any search engine traffic. Normally, the name of the page should be the same as your company name, the product you are promoting or the cause you are promoting. After naming the page and selecting the category it is ready to be created.

When created, you need to add some relevant content to appeal to potential fans. This can mean adding interesting pictures, useful content and general information about the product, business or cause. The key is to make it interesting and interactive so fans can actively engage with the page. The more people interact with the page the easier it is to spread word about your brand.

A downloadable guide to Facebook pages and the different features is available from the Facebook website. The guide also includes how you can access some statistics and demographics about fans and how they use the pages. This insight will help you refine your Facebook page marketing and help convert more fans into regular visitors to your main website.

The second strategy for generating traffic to your website using Facebook is to create paid advertisements. These work similarly to other cost-per-click (CPC) and cost-per-thousand (CPM) systems but with the notable difference of user profile information being used to determine
