Product reviews: Lush Whoosh shower jelly

Lush’s most innovative concept is the shower “jelly”. This is more solid than a bath gel but not as solid as a bar of soap. It is actually almost the same consistency as the dessert jelly you’d get out of a box of Jell-O®, with the main difference being that it won’t melt if not refrigerated. It’s also not slimy like the jelly you might imagine, and although it jiggles like Jell-O®, it isn’t so wobbly as to keep you from grabbing a chunk of it.

First of all, the idea here is to scoop out a bit of this jelly, put it on a sponge, flannel or puff, and then use it like you would any other shower gel. Of course, if you don’t want to use a flannel or puff, that’s okay too – but you won’t get as much lather that way. You’ll also find that if you don’t use a flannel or puff that chunks of this stuff will end up on the shower floor – which is a waste. Thankfully, when you do use a flannel or puff this jelly dissolves completely so there’s no waste there.

When you start using this jelly, the first thing you’ll notice is that it comes out fairly lumpy in little chunks. Mind you, these are soft chunks and digging into the product to get some out won’t be at all difficult, but because of its consistency, you’ll not be able to get your hands on much of the product. However, you’ll not need very much of this to get a good lather and perhaps this can be thought of as a “feature”. On first using this you may find it a bit of a trouble getting the stuff out with wet hands because this melts in water. This made the product a touch more slippery and as such, harder to grab onto. This also makes it harder to get an equal amount of the product each time you use it, so you may find that sometimes you take a bit too little while other times you grab onto a bit too much.

Part of the problem could be the packaging. Lush has never been one to get into fancy containers and this is no exception. You buy this by weight, which is not unusual for Lush, and they come in little clear plastic pots that look like they might have been designed to contain large-ish amounts of take-away salad dressing or Chinese sweet & sour sauce. The covers are also pretty flimsy and you should make sure the salesperson double wraps this as well as tapes the top to the container. In general, the concept of a shower jelly is a fairly good one, but the packaging is a touch
