How to let go of someone you love

1) Do not initiate contact with the person.

This is the most basic step. Stop initiating contact with the person. It's nearly impossible to let someone go when you are speaking and/or seeing that person still.

2) Avoid contact with the person.

If the other person tries to initiate contact, you're busy. You don't pick up the phone because you're out. If you aren't really, pretend to be. Pick up some hobbies to make it so you really are keeping yourself busy.

3) Don't waste time/energy on the person.

Try to avoid thinking about the person if at all possible. Also, although you should be avoiding the person, don't avoid your mutual friends or favorite places to spend time together. By doing this you are losing more than just "the one you love."

4) Don't be emotional.

No big thing where you tell the person you aren't speaking to him or her anymore. If you run into the person, it's hello, and goodbye. No argument, try not to act upset or happy to see the person. Acting emotional by being either happy, angry, sad, or anything else lets that person know you care, not something you want if you're trying to get over that person. Letting that person know you care encourages that person to try and stay a part of your life.

5) Get some hobbies.

This was already mentioned, but get some hobbies. Take up some form of exercise and maybe start reading. Try and use your extra time to improve yourself. Not only will you think less about the person you're getting over, you'll feel better about yourself, and other people will feel better about you as well. This will make it easier to date in the future.

6) Start dating other people.

I would say it's a bad idea to jump into something serious too soon, but start looking around and talking to people you may have interest in. Soon enough you'll find one or two or more people who spark your interest, and those people will capture your thoughts (and preferably it's multiple people until you're actually in a relationship with one, don't put all your eggs in one basket).
