Keyword density simply means the amount of time you use a particular keyword on your page, its more accurately described as a text to keyword ratio, a lot of SEO experts have different opinions about controlling your keyword density to increase your search engine rankings, some say its useless and should not be worried about but some say its very important.
So should we even bother with keyword density, well I say yes but I also say it should not be your main focus when dealing with search engine optimization. You should know how to check your keyword density on your page and you should then know what range you should be in.
Lets take the keyword "viewbar" and use the keyword density tool from SEO Chat to see what percentage this word is being used on the main page of my blog.
As of writing this post my current keyword density for this term is 1.73% and has been counted 34 times on my page, this is the ratio of the term "viewbar" to the amount of other words found on my page.
A good keyword density to be at is about 2.5% so as you can see I'm a little bit low but it does not matter because what I'm going to talk about next will tell you the average range you should be sitting in for your keyword density.
What we are going to do is type in the term "viewbar" into Google and then you use the keyword density tool to check the density of the pages that are in the top 10 search results and as long as your not extremely far off from these percentages, your sitting in a good range for that particular keyword.
I'll start with the first one and continue down the line until there is none left to check and what I've learned is that the keyword density is in the range of 1.11% to 18.18%, I've found this by taking the highest keyword density which is 18.18% and finding the lowest which is 1.11% your also going to find that sometimes the higher keyword density is ranked higher then a lower keyword density and vice versa but this is because SEO depends on various factors and not only on keyword density.
So as long as your in that range you should be safe with your keyword density, however its still probably best to be at around 2.5% for this particular keyword, again note that each time you change the content on your page, your keyword density is also going to change based upon how many times you used the keyword or didn't use the keyword.
I've gave you a bit of a hidden tip in this article that I'm going to be covering more later on and that is knowing what your competition is doing and then doing it better, I'm not saying copying them but I am saying that since we don't know exactly how Google index's these pages we do know what is working at this particular point in time based upon the top 10 Google results.
Thats it for this article, its just a brief point but its still worth knowing about, so there is no need to check your keyword density every time you change the content on your page but its a good idea to check up on it every once and awhile to make sure your still in a good range.
