Poetry: Fixed income

Grandma turned 65 today,
Last year Grandpa passed away.

As a widow, she'll have her check
And she'll have some from his, too;
But the twain added up
Will hardly do.

She owns her house,
But the tax went up.
She hires a cab,
Because she doesn't drive.

Groceries get higher every year
How shall she survive?

The doctor takes his monthly toll,
As do medicines for an aging frame
Sometimes she thinks she'll just get a job
But she knows better just the same.

Grandma turned 65 today;
She misses Grandpa,
And us kids are far away
She sits and sighs, Ah, pshaw!

She adds the  bills
With a quiver of fear
Will checks for gas
and electric really clear?

They had such dreams
So very long ago
What will she do?
She doesn't know.
