Hot temperatures, changing climates, water shortages, water usage regulations in many areas and simply, the necessity to preserve water, are all significant reasons grass free landscape designs are becoming growingly popular and will be beneficial in the future of yard and landscape design. This does not mean that we have to sacrifice a beautiful yard or a breathtaking landscape though. There are so many options that exist today to replace the use of grass that has become notorious for a need of constant water and regular maintenance, while not having to give up the functionality or comfort of the space.
Mulching
Mulching is not simply just wood chips anymore. Many different types of mulching exist today, made from several different products, and most are treated with fire resistant treatments eliminating the worries of fire. Available in a variety of colors, it can add a refreshing burst of color to any dry landscape. Mulching is a lightweight alternative to the use of grass, it is easy to work with and can be easily applied with a shovel and rake.
Natural rock and stone
Natural rocks or stones are also another great alternative for use in a grass free landscape. Combining the use of different colors or grades of loose material, arranged in a unique design, can create a low maintenance, attractive landscape that will last a lifetime. Although rock, gravel and stone can be a much heavier and costly choice of material to use, the finished landscape will be well worth the effort. Rock or stone borders and areas can also be used in combination with mulching to spice up any landscape area.
Artificial rock, bricks or stone
Many types of man made or artificial materials are also another popular choice of today for grass free and dry landscaping. Light weight, long lasting landscape materials are now available that often replicate the look of rock or brick. Easy to install, these bricks often are formed to stack easily and even lock together. Brick, stone work, or masonry is of course, a tried true solution but also can be a costly and heavy choice to cover a landscape area.
For landscape areas with low to no traffic, the use of wildflowers or spreading, low lying ground cover can also be another attractive choice for a grass free landscape. Many of these types of plants require less water than grass and need little to no maintenance throughout the year. This is probably not the best of choices for areas that are used on a regular basis or are in a high traffic zone. Pot gardens, borders of plants, trees and shrubs can also be used along with mulching or rock work to spice up your environment and bring a touch of life into your grass free landscape.
With the use of one, or all, of these grass free landscape ideas any area can be easily designed and transformed into fabulous in a short period of time, without spending a fortune or breaking your back in the process. The finished product can provide any landscape design with a low maintenance and often water free zone for your yard.
