Motor oil is used in automobiles because it is needed to lubricate moving parts, all throughout the vehicle, although mainly in the engine. It is a very important component, it is used so that metal components can work together without grinding and breaking. In this article i will explain from start to finish how to change the motor oil in your car or truck.

Initially, you will need to figure out which type of motor oil your vehicle takes, and how much. That information should be located in the owners manual. Now, you need to get the oil, and an oil filter. Motor oil is sold in almost all convenient store, or gas stations, and it is pretty cheap.

Next, you will need to grab a ratchet set, a rag, and a drainage bucket for the old oil.

Once you have all of these things, unlatch the hood and check your oil level by finding your dipstick, removing it, wipe it off with the rag and put it back in. Then pull it out to check the level.

Next, find the oil add cap, it should be directly on top of the engine block toward the sides. Unscrew it.

Now this is the part where you will get dirty, go ahead and put the emergency brake on and climb underneath your car. Locate the oil pan, look directly under it and you'll notice a bolt. This is where you will need that ratchet set. Match a ratchet head to the bolt, usually it will be a 1/2 inch head. Place the bucket underneath the drainage port, and slowly turn the bolt counter-clockwise with the ratchet, it is okay if the bolt falls in the oil bucket, you can just pull it out when the oil is cold enough.

Make sure while it is draining the oil insert cap is off. The draining process should take about 5-10 minutes. You should already have the oil filter, and be ready to go. Once it is done draining, replace the oil pan screw.

Locate the oil filter under the front of the engine block, and unscrew it, sometimes this can be difficult. Once the oil filter is off, lubricate the rubber ring of the new oil filter with the new motor oil. Now, screw that on.

Next, grab a funnel. Insert the funnel into the oil add hole on top. and slowly add the motor oil. Once it is all in screw on the cap, and read the oil dipstick. It should now say it is okay.

Great! your all done. You can dispose of your old oil at most Auto Zone stores, and Advanced auto parts stores. See, it wasn't all that hard?
