Traveling by bus is a very economic way to go as long as you aren't in a hurry to get there. It can be enjoyable to see the countryside since you don't have to keep your eyes on the road. However, there are some safety tips to keep in mind.
When traveling by bus you need to remember that because it is a cheap way to travel you may encounter some vagrants or pickpockets. Always keep your valuables close to you and never flash your cash around. Dress casual so as not to draw attention to yourself. You could spend some time in the bus terminal waiting to change buses. Bus terminals are not generally safe places to hang out.
You can sleep on the bus and this will save you on hotel costs but remember it's not the most comfortable way to sleep. People with medical problems could experience swelling feet from sleeping in a sitting up position. If you are traveling alone and you fall asleep then you are a prime target for thieves.
Traveling on a bus as a family can be dangerous but if you prepare and are cautious it can be quite safe. Remember to stay together and keep your children close. Educate your children so they don't wander away from your group.
Buses are generally safe to ride on however they do get into accidents occasionally. Accidents can be caused by overly tired bus drivers or by other drivers on the road. Sometimes wildlife will even decide to jump or fly into the path of the bus. Accidents can cause delays even if no one is injured.
If you are traveling by bus in other countries beware of reckless drivers. Some countries have less restrictions than the United States and you could end up on Mr Toad's wild ride if you aren't careful. Try to seat yourself near an exit just in case you need to get out quickly.
How the cost compare? Well, depending on where you are going the price can range from $8 to over $100. If you are a business person that has to travel often from New York to Washington DC then you could take a four hour bus ride and save yourself $60 or $70.
Traveling across the United States you can find deals if you shop around. Sometimes Greyhound will offer specials on round trip tickets. If you have the time to do it this way it can be a lot cheaper than flying, taking a train, or even driving.
