Defining Christian faith

It has been said, that in order to be a “True Christian”, you must believe that Jesus really was The Son of God, not merely an important and influential man of Biblical times. You must believe that Jesus died for the sins of the world, (and your personal sins as well).

He was resurrected to sit at the Right Hand of God. You must also willingly accept the Gift of Salvation for your sins, and repent from your previous sinful way of life. In order to do all of this, you must have something called “Faith.”

You may find yourself asking “What, exactly, is Faith?” For the new believer, (and sometimes even for the more experienced Christians among us), trying to nail down a true definition of what Faith is can be a bit confusing.

Hebrews 11:1, in the NIV (New International Version) of The Student Bible, defines Faith this way: “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.”

The Merriam-Webster dictionary says Faith is: “1. belief and trust in, and loyalty to, God. 2. Firm belief in something for which there is no proof.”

Finally, the website www.conservapedia.com states that Faith is “....a confidence or trust in the achievement of God’s will, even though unseen and unexpected by non-believers.”

Now that we have a better definition of what Faith is, the next question is “How do we go about having Faith?” The wisest course of action is to turn to the Bible itself, for guidance.

The Bible offers many examples of what it means to have Faith. One such example can be found in Genesis 22:1-22:18. This is the story of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his firstborn son. Abraham, and his wife, Sarah, had prayed to God for a son all of their lives. God graced them with the birth of Isaac, even though they were both thought to be too old to have a child. Their prayers had been answered.

One day, God spoke to Abraham and asked him to sacrifice Isaac as an offering to God. Even though this distressed Abraham greatly, he did as God commanded him, having great faith that God knew what was best. Just as Abraham was preparing to kill the son he had prayed so hard for, an Angel of The Lord appeared before him and ordered him to stop (Gen. 22:10- 22:13). Abraham showed great faith in God and withheld nothing from Him. As a reward for his faith, God spared the life of his son Isaac, and declared that God would make Abraham’s descendants “...as numerous
