Finding chores or housework for your child to do is an excellent way to build self-confidence while also instilling discipline and responsibility in your child. Your child will develop self-confidence when they begin to realize that simple tasks they can do often have a large impact on the people around them. So often children feel unnecessary or secondary when it comes to family responsibility. By showing your child the importance of finishing a task that has been started, they get a wonderful head start toward self-discipline and self-motivation. Many of the household chores are everyday tasks that a parent could and should delegate to the child. This helps both sides, because the parent also benefits by freeing up time that is too often spent doing mundane household chores.
For starters, choose simple tasks such as taking out the trash. While this is admittedly simple, it is repetitive and takes self-motivation to get it done. Doing the dishes is an excellent way for a child to discover that there is much more to the family meal than just sitting down at a pre-set table to enjoy a meal. They may discover an appreciation for the hard work that the parent puts in. Feeding or taking care of pets is also an excellent chore because it teaches kids that they have to live up to responsibility or others may suffer. Another chore along this line is doing the laundry. Children may learn that even boring or monotonous tasks carry large significance in the workings of a family.
Older children can begin to do jobs with larger responsibilities because they have been equipped through doing smaller jobs to take on the larger ones. Baby-sitting is a great way for a young person to learn about responsibility. Cleaning or washing the vehicles is another way that an older child can find joy in a menial task. Also yard work can be very rewarding. Often when a child cuts the grass or trims the hedges for the first time, they discover a love for nature that stays with them their whole life. They may discover a green thumb and really flourish in an atmosphere that gives them first-hand knowledge of the fruits of a person's labor. There are countless chores and housework that can be found for a child to do, especially out of doors.
It is never to early to help a child discover the rewards and joy of working to make the place a person lives into the best place possible.
