Biking or cycling are one of the very many competitive and recreational sports out there and can be enjoyed by either adults or kids but did you know it's also extremely beneficial in losing weight and maintaining endurance and tone? Weight loss is just the beginning of the many benefits of cycling which will be outlined below.
1) Weight Loss/Tonight
For those who suffer with weight issues, are looking to gain better endurance or just want to cross train, cycling offers high burning calorie to training ratios. It depends on your individual weight and intensity, but for the average 150lb man going a hard 15-20 kph for about an hour, it equals around 500-700 calories burnt, which is almost 3-4x more compared to running. Additionally, anyone looking to tone up should get involved in cycling, not only does it burn lots of calories but it involves using your whole body and core, as well as developing a strong lower body.
2) Relieves Stress/Anxiety
Riding a bicycle relieves stress, anxiety and depression of a person through the pure pleasure and satisfaction of the activity. It's simple enough that you can just jump on your bike no matter what time of day/night, or weather and just ride (keeping in mind safety issues with night time cycling, always wear reflective surfaces, etc. and ride according to weather i.e. snow tires or studs in winter).
3) Heart Health
Cycling minimizes the risk of coronary heart disease. Being a fully aerobic activity, it gives your heart, lungs and blood vessels a workout, lowering your risk of heart problems.
4) Social Networking
Cycling is also a great way to meet new people or an easy environment to talk with friends and family while exercising. Why not combine losing weight, relieving stress and lowering risk of heart disease among many other benefits while making friends?
5) Environmentally Friendly
Riding a bike is also environmentally friendly, using no gas or energy and in fact able to power small appliances if used as a stationary bike and connected to the right generator.
6) Transportation
One of the most obvious benefits of cycling, is it's ease of transportation. Riding relatively easy can cover long distances in short amounts of time and save you money as well as help you get fit.
So next time you're looking to go to the gym or want to lose some extra pounds, try jumping on the bike and doing a round of your neighborhood or even farther if you like...you won't be disappointed by the huge list of benefits you're getting!
