‘Tis the season for rain, snow and ice. The trees and other vegetation are frozen in time like a crystal sculpture. This can be quite beautiful, but it can also be quite dangerous. Not only does the ice build on trees but the roads, sidewalks and driveways.
Most people rush out before the storm to buy large quantities of rock salt. However, do you realize what you are doing to the balance of the ecosystem and to your own health? Scientific studies have found that by spreading around rock salt, this salt builds up in the soil to dangerous levels for plants. The soil becomes more acidic and it also impedes vegetation from absorbing moisture and nutrients needed to sustain life.
Not only does rock salt affect plant life but animals as well. They can get the rock salt between their paws and it can cause chemical burns. Another scary fact is that rock salt absorbed in the soil can make it to our drinking water and making us all sick.
So what are a few ways to de-ice your driveway without harming the environment? Here are a few eco-friendly tips and ideas that will help you cope with all of the ice build-up.
Removal
The first step is to remove the snow and ice soon after it falls. Sounds easy enough but here is why this is important. After the snow has fallen, it begins to melt. By removing as much moisture as possible, the less ice has a chance to form from the beginning. In many regions, temperatures plummet way below freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit) in a short amount of time during nightfall. This makes getting to work almost impossible the next morning. This is why you need to remove as much snow and rain from your driveway before bed as well.
Snow shovels
This method may involve physical labor but if you don’t feel like doing it yourself, you could always hire a neighborhood kid to do this chore for you. Kids and teens tend to be eager to make a quick buck and as adults we are eager to quickly prevent or remove any ice that has formed.
Snow blowers
This is another good way to get rid snow and ice. However, choosing the right snow blower will determine how you will affect the environment. Gas snow blowers emit pollution into the atmosphere. Consider using an electric snow blower instead.
Injuries happen each year when people attempt to remove snow and ice via a snow shovel. Another way to minimize this risk is to purchase a Wovel. A Wovel is an eco friendly way to remove snow and ice without cause you possible injuries. National Green Pages
