Candle making: How to add scents to homemade candles

Making your own scented candle can be such a fun experience if you have the proper equipment and a little know how on how to make a candle.  Making a candle is not a difficult task but as with anything you need to follow a proper order of how to complete the process in order for the candle to turn out the way you would like it to.  Knowing when to add the dye colors and scents is a crucial part of the candle making process.  Below is a list of equipment needed to make your candle as well as the steps for making your candle.

You will need:

1 meliting pot (or old sauce pan or kettle you no longer want to use for anything else besides candle making)

wax

spoon

thermometer

dye block in the color of your choice

scent block and or scented candle oils of your choice

candle container

candle wick

newspaper

tape

2 wooden skewers

To begin the process, get your candle container ready for pouring your wax into it.  You can use just about anything as a candle container as long as it is not flammable.  Lay out your newspaper in the area you are going to be pouring your candle in and set your candle container in the middle.  Take your 2 wooden skewers and tape the end of your wick to them making a platform for your wick to hang from.  Make sure your wick is touching the bottom of your container and center your wick in the bottom center of the container.  The skewers will lay across the top of your container holding your wick in place, so it can not move during the pouring and setting of your candle.

Now set your melting pot on your heat source on a medium heat.  You do not want your heat source to hot because wax does have a flash point and will catch on fire if it is heated up to hot.  Ideally, you will want to heat your wax up to about 160 degrees.   Next, you will slowly add your wax to your melting pot and stir occasionally to melt your wax down to a liquid.  Once you have your wax in a liquid state take your themometer and check the temperature of your wax.  Once it has reached a temperature of 160 degrees it is time to add the dye block color of your choice.  If you want a light almost opaque colored candle only use a little bit of dye.  If you want a very bright vibrant candle color than use a good portion of the dye block for maximum effect.  Stir the wax well to make sure the dye is well blended in with the wax.

Next step is to add your scent.
